  • Donor who supported Tory campaign in Ipswich on Cameron’s guest list

One of the Conservative party donors entertained by David Cameron was billionaire businessman Michael Spencer who has a house near Woodbridge and is an associate director of Ipswich Town.

The Ipwich Star picked up on this story today and went to local MP Ben Gummer for a quote in which he called for a £50,000 cap on “single donations”.

There is no mention of the fact that Mr Spencer’s business made a £5,000 donation towards Mr Gummer’s election campaign. But Ipswich Spy has been quick to fill in the missing information.

Could that reference to “single donations” be significant?

    Lobbying the lobbyist

Companies House record shows that not just Ben Gummer MP and his father the ex-minister John Gummer are directors of the PR/Lobbying firm Sancroft, his 2 sisters and a brother are also directors.

On Sancroft website, under “Why we are different”, it says, “we don’t judge – our role is to help our clients reduce their corporate responsibility risks and take advantage of opportunities – not to judge the merits of their products or business”

Sancroft was established in 1997, the Year when Tory lost the General Election and John Gummer lost his ministerial position.

Michael Spencer’s business made TWO donations, both of £5000, one on 9th April 2008 and one on 4th September 2009.

Mr Gummer is very clear that he has never been asked for preferment from donors. He also made the valid point that since there was no certainty he would win the seat back in 2008/9, it would be a bit bizarre to fund him in the hope that he might be able to change policy when he might not even be an MP.

Mr Gummer has told Ipswich Spy that there is no way he would consider the views of his donors when making a policy position or voting in the House of Commons. We can but believe him, and certainly his views on Europe would tend to show that he is well able to withstand considerable lobbying!
