Calls for more to petition Suffolk CC to keep reduce-price travel for students

An email from a neighbour, reminds me that there is more going on than the libraries campaign which has been dominating my thinking for the past few days.

She asked me to sign the petition to save the eXplore card which enables 16-19 year olds in eduction to travel at half fare on buses and many off-peak rail journeys. I have just become signatory 1,704.

Caroline Page is also urging people to sign and points out that it requires 3,675 signatures to  be taken before the full Suffolk County Council for the decision to be re-examined. So the appeal is to sign now as the petition is less than half-way there.

Is it US cost cutters and Bob the Builder in contention to run Suffolk Libraries?

East Anglian Daily Times headline on LSSI bid for Suffolk libraries

East Anglian Daily Times

Less than 24 hours after Wordblog reported on speculation about an American company, LSSI, bidding for Suffolk libraries, The East Anglian Daily Times confirms contact between the compay and the County Council.

But a further mystery emerges. Cllr Judy Terry, who is leading the libraries consultation, tells the EADT: “LSSI have come to us and would like to have a meeting. There is also another organisation that has been in touch.”

Would that “other organisation” be John Laing Integrated Services?

In June last year, Claire Griffiths, business development manager of JLIS, spoke at briefing session on “Models for the alternative governance and outsourcing of libraries”, organised by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). JLIS has managed Hounslow libraries since 2008, in the only libraries outsourcing arrangement so far in England.

She spoke immediately after Ron Dubberley, president of public library operations at LSSI. Another speaker was Alison Wheeeler, strategic commissioning officer at Suffolk County Council.

So it looks as if we might have a bunch of Americans who make money by screwing down employments cost and Bob the Builder (JLIS is an offshoot of the construction business) in contention to run Suffolk libraries.

I will blog again later today and in more detail about the EADT story which was put on their website at 9.24 this morning.
