Pickle says no need to cut front line jobs or services

From Eric Picles, the local government secretary, writing on the Conservative Home blog:

More and more councils biting the bullet on senior pay.  More and more councils coming together to share services.  And I’m determined to do everything possible to support them, in every way possible: by devolving power and by offering every council enough money to fund a council tax freeze next year.

…cutting front line jobs and hitting front line services isn’t inevitable– it doesn’t have to be an option at all.

But is the message getting through to his Tory colleagues who dominate Suffolk County Council?

Alas, the most terrible thing about what’s happening in Suffolk IS the ruthless inevitability of what the council is doing.

It is so swift, it may leave the hapless residents of Suffolk feeling we have no options.

The people in SCC responsible for this seeming fait accompli have hides as thick as rhinos and it will take very sharp darts indeed before they notice – let alone care – that anyone disagrees with them.

The only advice for all of us who want a county worth living in in 12 months time is to sharpen up those verbal darts, and get those online blowpipes working! So protest! make a fuss! don’t accept this madness!

It’s not inevitable unless we let it be so
