Every editor knows that sex sells but unless you get the balance right readers can be alienated. Golf Course News has, it seems, got that balance completely wrong when it relaunched three months ago.
One example was a scantily clad model with a flaming golf ball between her breasts on the cover to illustrate a feature on “women and golf — the burning issue”. Some of the core readership, of golfers, administrators and green-keepers may like this sort of thing but clubs including St Andrews, the home of golf in Scotland, have refused to stock the mag. Advertisers have withdrawn.
Amid claims that the relaunch appeared to be inspired by Loaded, editor Gareth Main told Scotland on Sunday that “we may have taken it a bit far”. He said: “But the good thing is that we got the magazine talked about. If we use similar material in the future then it will have to be justified and in context. We hope that now we have toned things down the advertisers will come back. We have a meeting with them next week.”
