The top ten newspapers in the UK and the US are making broadly similar use of web features. Nine out of ten in both countries provide RSS feeds in a comparison which shows the services provided are broadly similar. The differences emerge in the use of video, podcasts and journalists’ blogs which are more used in the US.
But when it comes to message boards and forums, the UK top ten is ahead (via Bivings Report).
Earlier this month Bivings, an American internet communications business, produced a report on the use of the internet by America’s top 100 newspapers. The comparison with the top ten UK papers was produced by Roger Hamman who is responsible for the user-to-user interactivity at BBC regional sites.
The Bivings report is interesting not only for the research into the use of various techniques by newspapers but in the way it put together other data (report pdf). For example a Pew report showed that people getting news on the internet on an average day in the US increased from 19 million in 2000 to 44 million in 2005. The following figures, from the National Association of Newspapers, says the numbers reading daily papers has declined from 55.1 million in 2000 to 51.6 million in 2005.
If those trends continue it will not be long before online news audiences overtake those for print. But it does not tell us what proportion of the population consume both online and print news.
