A new commercial radio station is promising that its newsroom will be staffed around the clock to provide live local news. Original 106fm will start broadcasting in October from transmitters in Bournemouth, Winchester and the Isle of Wight, a region with a population of 1.25 million adults.
While many commercial stations have minimal local news coverage, Original’s programme director, John Evington, has told the Press Gazette: “The research carried out in the run-up to the licence application showed there was a lot of interest in having more news bulletins. From an audience point of view it is an obvious point of difference over the other stations in the market.”
The station will be encouraging listeners to phone, email or text stories at any time of the day or night.
Original 106 is 95% owned by the Canadian CanWest media group.
