TimesOnline appointments mark start of new developments

The TimesOnline announced senior editorial changes today which are taken to be a signal of the investment in developing the site which Rupert Murdoch has promised.

Anne Spackman moves from managing editor of The Times to the new role of editor-in-chief of Times Online. Peter Bale who was editorial director of TimesOnline becomes editorial director of digital strategy. And Sunday Times Managing Editor, Richard Caseby takes on the extra job of assistant editor of the online operation.

It is difficult to know what to make of these appointments especially with one man doing two jobs but they appear to be a sign of a determination to further integrate the two papers’ web operations as the Press Gazette reports.

But with 8 million unique monthly visitors TimesOnline has a long way to go to match GuardianUnlimited. It is a task that is going to need a lot of flair.
