  • The mystery of why The Express puts Princess Di on front pages

For a wise opinion on the press I talk to Grace, my village newsagent. She runs an excellent shop and delivery service in a place which is far enough away from the supermarkets not to feel their full effect.

This morning she patted a small pile of Sunday Expresses and said it was not doing well. “Another Diana story. People don’t want that. Think of those poor boys,” she said.

It is a mystery why both the Sunday and Daily Express both keep on putting Princess Diana on their front pages. It clearly is not helping circulation which is falling more rapidly than most other papers. The Sunday at 830,006 in June is down almost 11% in a year (source: Press Gazette).

The front page of today”s Sunday Express has a single column picture of Princess Diana leading to an inside story. If is not as if it is new, the story about the Italian magazine Chi printing a picture dying in the car in a Paris underpass broke during last week. On the website the story is promoted to the top position.

In case any Express readers should wish to see the picture they say it is available in Britain in copies of Corriere della Sera on sale here. You might still find a copy of Thursday’s edition as foreign papers do tend to hang around a bit longer on the news stands.
