Sex beats BBC in podcast ratings?

Newsnight editor Peter Barron wastes no time in hitting pack at print critics of the BBC licence-funded spending on their web site, in the broadcaster’s new editors’ blog. He writes:

It’s fashionable these days in media columns to lobby for things that would assist your own media organisation and restrain the excesses of others.

The estimable Emily Bell of the Guardian is always at it, complaining recently about the BBC’s digital plans and asking “is it really necessary, useful or at all enhancing to have a Newsnight podcast?”. The viewers of course have answered resoundingly by propelling our weekly offering to number three in the news podcast chart.

Newsnight is apparently behind Radio4’s From Out Own Correspondent. And in the number one spot: Kitcast, a weekly videoblog covering the world of sex.

So, it seems that while the Guardian’s podcasts can’t beat the BBC there is one news organisation that can. Sadly, I cannot assess the reliability of the rankings as Barron does not reveal his source, nor can I find the Kitcast videoblog.
